Youth Radio is a two-time Peabody Award-winning youth-driven production company that is headquartered in the heart of downtown Oakland, California and serves as
NPR's Official Youth Desk. The nonprofit organization also runs bureaus in Los Angeles, DC, and Atlanta, and collaborates with youth correspondents from across the U.S. on multimedia stories covering every modern issue shaping our nation—from health care access, to educational inequality, to innovations in technology.
Recent investigative series reported by Youth Radio’s newsroom have exposed the hidden costs of juvenile incarceration and child sex trafficking in Oakland. What makes this top-quality journalism possible is a comprehensive media education program taught after-school by an adult faculty and peer educators, as well as support services that promote young people’s healthy pursuit of academic, civic, and professional pathways.
In 2010 Youth Radio became one of the first programs world-wide to teach teens to develop mobile apps that engage, inform, and activate their communities. Now called Youth Radio Interactive, the program is a partnership with MIT. It’s based on the premise that “every app needs a story,” and that young people can use digital media and data to express voice and agency in public spheres.
