My idea for this holiday is deeply inspired by my mentor Tony Osumi and a workshop he created, called Feast of Resistance. His workshop aimed to explore the political and forgotten stories within the Asian American community through food. I wanted to use this concept and apply it towards a larger community, in hopes of creating pan-ethnic coalition building and community engagement. This assignment has challenged me to try to think of a holiday that can engage the public into some type of social justice dialogue. For myself, politicization comes from a very personal level and I wanted to create a day that would provide an inclusive space for others to begin to explore activism. I’ve attached an info graphic below of what I’d envision for a new holiday. A feast of resistance would be a space to create intergenerational, interracial and interfaith dialogue.
