While all media can be considered social, this "Social Media" category includes media in which activists utilized tools, applications, and platforms that allow people to create or share information through networked communities. Examples include campaigns that organize around or spread ideas using hashtags, images, or videos through platforms like Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, internet forums, blogs, etc.

Nicole Mirra, teacher educator, scholar, and member of the UCLA Writing Project, talks about encouraging pre-service teachers to incorporate the teaching of civic and media literacy skills in their classrooms. Using examples from the BAM resource and through sharing her lesson planning and scaffolding documents and processes, she demonstrates how she incorporates these themes in her own teaching. She also makes the case for the value of this kind of work and connects these practices to common core state and national standards.
