Supply & Demand Rap: WE GOT IT 4 CHEAP by Dorian Electra ( Official Music Video ) Uploaded on Dec 12, 2011 This song was created to enter the Supply and Demand Video Contest sponsored by Fayetteville State University's Hackley Endowment. We are students at Shimer College and Northwestern University. Made by: Dorian Electra & Neil Lokken Music by: Matt Kawahara Special Thanks: Lynn Hong, Bryan Maddox, Robin Babb, Allison Savage, Allon Libermann, Rachel Davison. LYRICS: Yo. We got it 4 cheap And we're tryin to be supplyin So we got to compete. OH. And we try to understand The laws we all cant help but follow called: SUPPLY AND DEMAND If I'm sellin somethin Here's what I got to know To ensure my sales be bumpin If we raise the price, fewer people be buyin If we push that price down low, customers be multiplyin It's not to simple just to sell it for cheap You got to cover your costs Ya tryna make ends meet Say we were forced to keep our price way down. LOW Our goods become more scarce become the talk of the town. OH If the law won't let us respond in turn by raising our money PRICE Then our lovely customers will have to pay the price in non- monetary costs such as waitin in line On day when you could be HUSTLIN and now you wastin yo time So when the prices are fixed costs remain, don't fall for tricks That extra cost don't disappear It just shift from here to here You got dem long long lines? Wait a sec, shorty, that ain't right UHM. SHORTY DAT LOOK LIKE A SHORTAGE SHORTY, SHORTY DAT LOOK LIKE A SHORTAGE Ooo. When dat price so low So they be rushin to da store tramplin one another to DA FLOOR uh Ya get it? It's about supply and demand. Ya get it? Yyeeaaaaaaaaahhhhh Yes sir, sir yes, what about a surplus? Yes sir, sir yes, what about a surplus? When you got leftover GOODS on your HANDS Cos the quantity supplied exceeds the quantity demanded Yo. We got it 4 cheap And we're tryin to be supplyin So we got to compete. OH And we try to understand The laws we all cant help but follow called: SUPPLY AND DEMAND

Social justice through parody NWP Albert is an Economics teacher at Locke High School in the Watts area of South LA and member of the UCLA Writing Project, shown here describing a lesson plan he created for students to engage with social issues through parody and activism by using some of the media examples he found on the By Any Media Necessary web resource. He talks about moving beyond concepts of supply and demand by infusing his economics classes with social justice themes that students are receptive to, and talks about how part of his course asks students to think about the implications of globalization on poverty. He explains his process of looking through media examples on the site that discuss social issues through parody, draws inspiration from a DREAMer video that speaks to healthcare for millions of undocumented immigrants, and talks about using these kinds of videos as a springboard to bring to light these and other social issues. Connecting it to his lesson plan, he will have students create a parody around a social issue they choose, helping them to think about what they can do with the current situation, spaces, and resources they have.

10th graders in Watts NWP Kate is a 10th grade Language Arts teacher at Locke High School in the Watts area of South LA and member of the UCLA Writing Project, shown here describing the neighborhood and community context that situates her lesson plan about vehicles of protest as a response to trauma. She starts by describing the everyday lived realities of her students, the disconnect between what the district requires them to read and learn in their classes, and how she has reframed canonical books to be more responsive to students who live in communities like Watts, and how this kind of lesson can be identified with everywhere. She uses Lord of the Flies as an example of how she reframed the book characters’ experiences to talk about trauma, violence, limited resources, and support and help seeking practices.

At the end of this clip, Kate emphasizes the importance of scaffolding, modeling, and having students practice these kinds of civic engagement, so that they can develop their voices as well as strategies to advocate for themselves and their communities, and learn ways to participate civically.
