Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Social justice through parody NWP
3
Albert is an Economics teacher at Locke High School in the Watts area of South LA and member of the UCLA Writing Project, shown here describing a lesson plan he created for students to engage with social issues through parody and activism by using some of the media examples he found on the By Any Media Necessary web resource. He talks about moving beyond concepts of supply and demand by infusing his economics classes with social justice themes that students are receptive to, and talks about how part of his course asks students to think about the implications of globalization on poverty. He explains his process of looking through media examples on the site that discuss social issues through parody, draws inspiration from a DREAMer video that speaks to healthcare for millions of undocumented immigrants, and talks about using these kinds of videos as a springboard to bring to light these and other social issues. Connecting it to his lesson plan, he will have students create a parody around a social issue they choose, helping them to think about what they can do with the current situation, spaces, and resources they have.

Teaching Teachers NWP
2
Nicole Mirra, teacher educator, scholar, and member of the UCLA Writing Project, talks about encouraging pre-service teachers to incorporate the teaching of civic and media literacy skills in their classrooms. Using examples from the BAM resource and through sharing her lesson planning and scaffolding documents and processes, she demonstrates how she incorporates these themes in her own teaching. She also makes the case for the value of this kind of work and connects these practices to common core state and national standards.

10th graders in Watts NWP
2
Kate is a 10th grade Language Arts teacher at Locke High School in the Watts area of South LA and member of the UCLA Writing Project, shown here describing the neighborhood and community context that situates her lesson plan about vehicles of protest as a response to trauma. She starts by describing the everyday lived realities of her students, the disconnect between what the district requires them to read and learn in their classes, and how she has reframed canonical books to be more responsive to students who live in communities like Watts, and how this kind of lesson can be identified with everywhere. She uses Lord of the Flies as an example of how she reframed the book characters’ experiences to talk about trauma, violence, limited resources, and support and help seeking practices.

Protest songs and images NWP
2
Kate is a 10th grade Language Arts teacher at Locke High School in the Watts area of South LA and member of the UCLA Writing Project, shown here discussing the lesson plan she created on different vehicles of protest as a response to trauma, drawing inspiration from examples of protest songs, spreadable image and hashtag campaigns, and internet memes. She talks about expanding on traditional notions of civic engagement so that students can engage peers and their communities in ways that are meaningful to them, and also discusses figuring out how to navigate privacy and safety when working with images or videos of her students, sharing various levels of “publicness” that can be achieved through creative lesson planning. At the end of this clip, Kate emphasizes the importance of scaffolding, modeling, and having students practice these kinds of civic engagement, so that they can develop their voices as well as strategies to advocate for themselves and their communities, and learn ways to participate civically.

Are there limits to what activists can or should do in the service of their cause? Does greater power come with greater responsibility? These issues surface most often in discussions around 4Chan and the Anonymous movement, where there is a thin line between actions designed to provoke social change and thus which look much more like online trolling designed to simply provoke a reaction or generate LOLS. Yet, all activist groups have to struggle with what forms of action might be more destructive than beneficial to them, their cause, and society at large.
Real World Example
Building on the "coming out" tactics of the DREAMer movement, Jonathan Perez and Isaac Berrera (two undocumented youth), " walked into the Border Patrol office in Alabama to ask a few questions " on November 10, 2010. They used their phone cameras to document encounter. Both young men were detained as a consequence of their action. A campaign for their release was initiated by their allies and supporters . While both Perez and Berrera were eventually temporarily released, their strategy continues to raise questions about the balance between risk and benefit of their action. Was their action worth the risk? How did their documentation of the event help tip the balance of their civic action?
