Social justice through parody NWP Albert is an Economics teacher at Locke High School in the Watts area of South LA and member of the UCLA Writing Project, shown here describing a lesson plan he created for students to engage with social issues through parody and activism by using some of the media examples he found on the By Any Media Necessary web resource. He talks about moving beyond concepts of supply and demand by infusing his economics classes with social justice themes that students are receptive to, and talks about how part of his course asks students to think about the implications of globalization on poverty. He explains his process of looking through media examples on the site that discuss social issues through parody, draws inspiration from a DREAMer video that speaks to healthcare for millions of undocumented immigrants, and talks about using these kinds of videos as a springboard to bring to light these and other social issues. Connecting it to his lesson plan, he will have students create a parody around a social issue they choose, helping them to think about what they can do with the current situation, spaces, and resources they have.

Teaching Teachers NWP Nicole Mirra, teacher educator, scholar, and member of the UCLA Writing Project, talks about encouraging pre-service teachers to incorporate the teaching of civic and media literacy skills in their classrooms. Using examples from the BAM resource and through sharing her lesson planning and scaffolding documents and processes, she demonstrates how she incorporates these themes in her own teaching. She also makes the case for the value of this kind of work and connects these practices to common core state and national standards.

She starts by describing the everyday lived realities of her students, the disconnect between what the district requires them to read and learn in their classes, and how she has reframed canonical books to be more responsive to students who live in communities like Watts, and how this kind of lesson can be identified with everywhere. She uses Lord of the Flies as an example of how she reframed the book characters’ experiences to talk about trauma, violence, limited resources, and support and help seeking practices.

She starts by describing the everyday lived realities of her students, the disconnect between what the district requires them to read and learn in their classes, and how she has reframed canonical books to be more responsive to students who live in communities like Watts, and how this kind of lesson can be identified with everywhere. She uses Lord of the Flies as an example of how she reframed the book characters’ experiences to talk about trauma, violence, limited resources, and support and help seeking practices.

She talks about expanding on traditional notions of civic engagement so that students can engage peers and their communities in ways that are meaningful to them, and also discusses figuring out how to navigate privacy and safety when working with images or videos of her students, sharing various levels of “publicness” that can be achieved through creative lesson planning. At the end of this clip, Kate emphasizes the importance of scaffolding, modeling, and having students practice these kinds of civic engagement, so that they can develop their voices as well as strategies to advocate for themselves and their communities, and learn ways to participate civically.

Fiction / Narrative Fiction or narrative storytelling can be a creative way to deal with political and social issues by imagining hypothetical scenarios or characters that illustrate a specific point. Fiction allows a wide range of freedom for the storyteller to experiment with different characters, situations, and outcomes. Often grounded in past experiences or present circumstances, fiction can present hybrid portraits of personality types or hypothetical futures.

For example, the "No Health Care? No Problem!" video tackles the serious issues around the lack of health care access for undocumented immigrants. But though the film ends with a series of informative statistics to support its claim, the bulk of the argument is illustrated through a satirical, fictional scenario with an imaginary family. The family itself is a composite of those most vulnerable to health care issues, namely children and the elderly. Through a humorous story that pushes the bounds of logic, the narrative draws attention to the absurdity of their vulnerability and the negative effects of not having proper access to needed medical care.

Additionally, fictional characters and stories within popular culture can often become powerful sites for community building. With many of the groups, the initial meaning of the stories are expanded or reinterpreted to provide deeper social value to inspiring, fantastical narratives. The Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) for example is a strong example of storyworlds that become shared topics in which disparate groups can come together and start a conversation. For example, after the release of Man of Steel, HPA started a campaign called Superman is an Immigrant. The campaigned spurred a national conversation as well as a participatory tumblr to discuss what it means to be an immigrant in the US. Superman was chosen as a symbol of the powerful potential of immigrants, since Superman himself is an Alien immigrant from another planet. They weren't the first to make the connection, as Erick Huerta has been long blogging under the guise of a superhero immigrant. Also in 2001, Dulce Pinzón created a photo series depicting immigrant workers as the true "heroes' of everyday life.
