Social justice through parody NWP Albert is an Economics teacher at Locke High School in the Watts area of South LA and member of the UCLA Writing Project, shown here describing a lesson plan he created for students to engage with social issues through parody and activism by using some of the media examples he found on the By Any Media Necessary web resource. He talks about moving beyond concepts of supply and demand by infusing his economics classes with social justice themes that students are receptive to, and talks about how part of his course asks students to think about the implications of globalization on poverty. He explains his process of looking through media examples on the site that discuss social issues through parody, draws inspiration from a DREAMer video that speaks to healthcare for millions of undocumented immigrants, and talks about using these kinds of videos as a springboard to bring to light these and other social issues. Connecting it to his lesson plan, he will have students create a parody around a social issue they choose, helping them to think about what they can do with the current situation, spaces, and resources they have.

This documentary explores the issue of 'carding' in Toronto and distrust between police and community. Featuring Deputy Chief Peter Sloly of the Toronto Police Service, Jim Rankin of the Toronto Star Dr. Scot Wortley of University of Toronto, Gary Newman of Breaking the Cycle, Noa Mendelsohn Aviv of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and members of the Policing Literacy Initiative, among others.

At the end of this clip, Kate emphasizes the importance of scaffolding, modeling, and having students practice these kinds of civic engagement, so that they can develop their voices as well as strategies to advocate for themselves and their communities, and learn ways to participate civically.

Using examples from the BAM resource and through sharing her lesson planning and scaffolding documents and processes, she demonstrates how she incorporates these themes in her own teaching. She also makes the case for the value of this kind of work and connects these practices to common core state and national standards.

114. 10th graders in Watts NWP Kate is a 10th grade Language Arts teacher at Locke High School in the Watts area of South LA and member of the UCLA Writing Project, shown here describing the neighborhood and community context that situates her lesson plan about vehicles of protest as a response to trauma. She starts by describing the everyday lived realities of her students, the disconnect between what the district requires them to read and learn in their classes, and how she has reframed canonical books to be more responsive to students who live in communities like Watts, and how this kind of lesson can be identified with everywhere. She uses Lord of the Flies as an example of how she reframed the book characters’ experiences to talk about trauma, violence, limited resources, and support and help seeking practices.

Graffiti Knitting

About

Graffiti knitting, also called yarn bombing and yarn storming, is a loose international movement that blends graffiti and fiber arts, primarily knitting and crochet. Graffiti knitters make their pieces in private, often in groups, and then install them in public spaces. The yarn bombs are temporary, as they are easily removed by cutting the yarn with scissors, and the yarn itself deteriorates after a few weeks of being exposed to the elements. Just as paint graffiti is known to straddle the lines between art and politics, graffiti knitting groups engage with issues relevant to their local communities and spaces though in an artistic, often humorous, way. Although graffiti knitting is technically just as illegal as graffiti painting, it is very rarely prosecuted.

Artists had previously used yarn as a medium, but most agree the graffiti knitting movement was founded in 2005 by Texan Magda Sayeg and her group, Knitta Please. The movement spread via knitters and groups posting pictures of their installed pieces online and sharing them with each other. Though the groups are physically separate and pursue diverse projects, many come together virtually to install graffiti knitting and upload the photographs on International Yarnbombing Day, organized by Joann Matvichuk in Alberta.
Key Issues
Graffiti knitting is a tactic that can be used to comment on a wide variety of issues. By its nature, it is often concerned with the use and appearance of public space. Many groups also comment on issues related to gender, as knitting is often associated with women and graffiti with men, and environmentalism, via sustainable practices like re-using yarn and highlighting nature (or the lack thereof) in urban environments.
