Social justice through parody NWP Albert is an Economics teacher at Locke High School in the Watts area of South LA and member of the UCLA Writing Project, shown here describing a lesson plan he created for students to engage with social issues through parody and activism by using some of the media examples he found on the By Any Media Necessary web resource. He talks about moving beyond concepts of supply and demand by infusing his economics classes with social justice themes that students are receptive to, and talks about how part of his course asks students to think about the implications of globalization on poverty. He explains his process of looking through media examples on the site that discuss social issues through parody, draws inspiration from a DREAMer video that speaks to healthcare for millions of undocumented immigrants, and talks about using these kinds of videos as a springboard to bring to light these and other social issues. Connecting it to his lesson plan, he will have students create a parody around a social issue they choose, helping them to think about what they can do with the current situation, spaces, and resources they have.

She starts by describing the everyday lived realities of her students, the disconnect between what the district requires them to read and learn in their classes, and how she has reframed canonical books to be more responsive to students who live in communities like Watts, and how this kind of lesson can be identified with everywhere. She uses Lord of the Flies as an example of how she reframed the book characters’ experiences to talk about trauma, violence, limited resources, and support and help seeking practices.

Social justice through parody NWP Albert is an Economics teacher at Locke High School in the Watts area of South LA and member of the UCLA Writing Project, shown here describing a lesson plan he created for students to engage with social issues through parody and activism by using some of the media examples he found on the By Any Media Necessary web resource. He talks about moving beyond concepts of supply and demand by infusing his economics classes with social justice themes that students are receptive to, and talks about how part of his course asks students to think about the implications of globalization on poverty. He explains his process of looking through media examples on the site that discuss social issues through parody, draws inspiration from a DREAMer video that speaks to healthcare for millions of undocumented immigrants, and talks about using these kinds of videos as a springboard to bring to light these and other social issues. Connecting it to his lesson plan, he will have students create a parody around a social issue they choose, helping them to think about what they can do with the current situation, spaces, and resources they have.

Throughout the summer of 2011, 9-year-old Caine Monroy accompanied his father to their auto parts shop in East LA. An avid arcade player, Caine made use of leftover cardboard boxes to start building his own arcade in his father's storefront. The simple idea turned into an elaborate cardboard game set, complete with tokens, prizes, and business cards. At the end of summer, Nirvan Mullick became Caine's first customer when he bought a $2 fun pass for 500 plays. Taken by this young entrepreneur, Nirvan asked Caine's father permission to make a short film about Caine's Arcade. He created a facebook event and shared the idea online to invite more customers to play at Caine's Arcade. On the day of shooting, a large crowd (with a larger online following) had gathered to surprise Caine.

Once Nirvan's film hit the net in April 2012, it went viral and created a wave of financial support for Caine's Scholarship Fund and inspiration for children's creativity everywhere. Due to the overwhelming global response, Caine's Arcade led to the development of the Imagination Foundation, a non-profit with a mission to "find, fund, and foster creativity and entrepreneurship in kids around the world." Along with the Global Cardboard Challenge, Caine's legacy has now spread to countless schools, communities, and countries, and inspired creative youth and educators all over.
