Social justice through parody NWP Albert is an Economics teacher at Locke High School in the Watts area of South LA and member of the UCLA Writing Project, shown here describing a lesson plan he created for students to engage with social issues through parody and activism by using some of the media examples he found on the By Any Media Necessary web resource. He talks about moving beyond concepts of supply and demand by infusing his economics classes with social justice themes that students are receptive to, and talks about how part of his course asks students to think about the implications of globalization on poverty. He explains his process of looking through media examples on the site that discuss social issues through parody, draws inspiration from a DREAMer video that speaks to healthcare for millions of undocumented immigrants, and talks about using these kinds of videos as a springboard to bring to light these and other social issues. Connecting it to his lesson plan, he will have students create a parody around a social issue they choose, helping them to think about what they can do with the current situation, spaces, and resources they have.

She starts by describing the everyday lived realities of her students, the disconnect between what the district requires them to read and learn in their classes, and how she has reframed canonical books to be more responsive to students who live in communities like Watts, and how this kind of lesson can be identified with everywhere. She uses Lord of the Flies as an example of how she reframed the book characters’ experiences to talk about trauma, violence, limited resources, and support and help seeking practices.

She talks about expanding on traditional notions of civic engagement so that students can engage peers and their communities in ways that are meaningful to them, and also discusses figuring out how to navigate privacy and safety when working with images or videos of her students, sharing various levels of “publicness” that can be achieved through creative lesson planning. At the end of this clip, Kate emphasizes the importance of scaffolding, modeling, and having students practice these kinds of civic engagement, so that they can develop their voices as well as strategies to advocate for themselves and their communities, and learn ways to participate civically.

She starts by describing the everyday lived realities of her students, the disconnect between what the district requires them to read and learn in their classes, and how she has reframed canonical books to be more responsive to students who live in communities like Watts, and how this kind of lesson can be identified with everywhere. She uses Lord of the Flies as an example of how she reframed the book characters’ experiences to talk about trauma, violence, limited resources, and support and help seeking practices.

She talks about expanding on traditional notions of civic engagement so that students can engage peers and their communities in ways that are meaningful to them, and also discusses figuring out how to navigate privacy and safety when working with images or videos of her students, sharing various levels of “publicness” that can be achieved through creative lesson planning. At the end of this clip, Kate emphasizes the importance of scaffolding, modeling, and having students practice these kinds of civic engagement, so that they can develop their voices as well as strategies to advocate for themselves and their communities, and learn ways to participate civically.

Founded in 2007, Students for Liberty (SFL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students and student organizations in the goal of advancing liberty in the United States and globally. "Fear the Boom and Bust" a Hayek vs. Keynes Rap Anthem

Music Videos Music videos are a particularly powerful and complicated maker practice. They combine the complexities of both clever song writing techniques with often fast-paced video editing, that tells a story or provides a visually stimulating counterpoint to the music. But for millennials and those growing up after the launch of MTV in 1981, the format has become part-and-parcel to media consumptions habits.

What music videos, particularly pop and hip-hop, offer though as a pedagogical tool is their catchy, repetitive song structure that repeats choruses and act as a mnemonic device. Moreover the lyrical rhyme system of storytelling information or rhetorical statements provide an emotionally engaging and easy-to-follow logical structure.

Amongst the organizations, they're both examples of completely original songs as well as parody songs, that use pre-existing songs as a base to change the lyrical content or original meaning. For example, the music video Fear the Boom and Bust is an original song that uses hip-hop tropes to analyze opposing economic philosophies of Friedrich Hayek and John Maynard Keyes. The playful song helps to make the dry subject more fun while the simple storyline of the video helps to illustrate their opposing arguments and lifestyles.

Black and Yellow - AnCap Remix on the other hand uses a pre-existing popular song by Wiz Khalifa to give it new meaning. While the original song referred to the "Black and Yellow" of Pittsburg Steelers, in the remix it's used to refer to the colors of the Anarcho-Capitalist flag. So the remix reappropriates the rallying spirit of the original and directs that energy towards defining an ingroup identity of what it means to be an Anarcho-Capitalist. Libertarians
