Social justice through parody NWP Albert is an Economics teacher at Locke High School in the Watts area of South LA and member of the UCLA Writing Project, shown here describing a lesson plan he created for students to engage with social issues through parody and activism by using some of the media examples he found on the By Any Media Necessary web resource. He talks about moving beyond concepts of supply and demand by infusing his economics classes with social justice themes that students are receptive to, and talks about how part of his course asks students to think about the implications of globalization on poverty. He explains his process of looking through media examples on the site that discuss social issues through parody, draws inspiration from a DREAMer video that speaks to healthcare for millions of undocumented immigrants, and talks about using these kinds of videos as a springboard to bring to light these and other social issues. Connecting it to his lesson plan, he will have students create a parody around a social issue they choose, helping them to think about what they can do with the current situation, spaces, and resources they have.

Teaching Teachers NWP Nicole Mirra, teacher educator, scholar, and member of the UCLA Writing Project, talks about encouraging pre-service teachers to incorporate the teaching of civic and media literacy skills in their classrooms. Using examples from the BAM resource and through sharing her lesson planning and scaffolding documents and processes, she demonstrates how she incorporates these themes in her own teaching. She also makes the case for the value of this kind of work and connects these practices to common core state and national standards.

97. 10th graders in Watts NWP Kate is a 10th grade Language Arts teacher at Locke High School in the Watts area of South LA and member of the UCLA Writing Project, shown here describing the neighborhood and community context that situates her lesson plan about vehicles of protest as a response to trauma. She starts by describing the everyday lived realities of her students, the disconnect between what the district requires them to read and learn in their classes, and how she has reframed canonical books to be more responsive to students who live in communities like Watts, and how this kind of lesson can be identified with everywhere. She uses Lord of the Flies as an example of how she reframed the book characters’ experiences to talk about trauma, violence, limited resources, and support and help seeking practices.

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Millennium Stage, present an evening to celebrate the winners of the national spoken word competition designed to foster discussion among young people and adults about the challenges and opportunities students face as they strive to stay on the path to graduation. About
Growing up in South Los Angeles, where fresh produce and access to healthy food options were scarce at best, Ron Finley has started stirring up the community in an effort to turn such spaces deemed food deserts (or food prisons) into food forests. The abundance of fast food, he argues, is wreaking havoc on the health of our kids and communities. The solution is to make healthy foods available, and to do that, he turns to the basics of the environment he has at his disposal.

The logic is simple. If you plant it, it will grow. Finley has been on a mission to plant food in the empty and unused urban areas in South Los Angeles. When the city of Los Angeles blocked his efforts to grow food on the green areas surrounding the pavement of his home, Finley petitioned the community to fight back and maintained his right to garden and grow food in his neighborhood.

As Finley's personal cause has gained momentum, it has also expanded in scope. Now part of the Ron Finley Project, there are plans to build an urban garden in South Central LA, a community hub called "HQ." This fruit and veggie oasis is also envisioned as a space where people can learn about nutrition, and join together to work, plant, and unwind, with the goal of becoming "a self-sufficient ecosystem of gardening, education, cooking, business learning and management."
